Kilrea Bridge on the B64 Bann Road has been closed in both directions following concerns about the structural stability of a retaining wall.

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) confirmed the closure will take effect from Saturday, 20 September, after a recent safety inspection revealed vertical and diagonal cracking on the retaining wall at the south-west end of the bridge, which carries traffic over the River Bann.

A DfI spokesperson said:

“In the interest of public safety, the Department has taken the decision to close the road until such times as the retaining wall can be fully assessed, and repairs carried out. We acknowledge this will create disruption and apologise for any inconvenience caused, however, the safety of all road users is paramount.”

The bridge is expected to remain closed for several weeks while engineers put a temporary solution in place. Once these works are complete, the road will reopen while a permanent repair plan is developed.

DfI has put in place local diversion routes and is urging drivers to follow all signage, take extra care and allow additional time for their journeys.

The closure is likely to cause disruption in the Kilrea area, particularly for commuters and businesses that rely on the B64 route.
