The Met Office has updated its yellow weather warning as Storm Floris is expected to bring a bout of unseasonably strong and potentially disruptive winds to Northern Ireland and other parts of the northern UK on Monday 4 August 2025.
The warning is now in place from 06:00 until 23:59 (UTC+1) on Monday, with forecasters predicting gusts of 40 to 50mph inland, and up to 70mph in exposed coastal areas and high ground.
A Met Office spokesperson said:
“Storm Floris will bring a spell of unusually windy weather for the time of year across the northern half of the UK on Monday. The highest winds are expected across Scotland between late morning and early evening. In some areas high winds will be accompanied by heavy rain. Wind will then slowly start to ease from the west later.”
While Scotland is expected to bear the brunt of the storm—with a separate amber warning issued for parts of the country—Northern Ireland is also likely to experience disruption due to high winds and rainfall throughout Monday.
The Met Office is advising residents in affected areas to exercise caution when travelling, especially in high-sided vehicles, and to secure loose outdoor items that could become airborne in gusty conditions.
Storm Floris among strongest summer storms of 2025
Storm Floris is the sixth named storm of the 2024/2025 season, and although such events are more typical in the autumn and winter months, forecasters stress that summer storms are not unprecedented.
The combination of strong winds and potential downpours increases the risk of travel delays, temporary power cuts, and debris on roads, particularly in rural or coastal areas.
Further updates and real-time warnings are available via the Met Office website, social media channels, and mobile app.
