Police and emergency services are continuing to urge caution across Northern Ireland as Storm Amy moves from an Amber weather warning to a Yellow alert.

The storm, which has already caused widespread disruption, left around 50,000 customers without power on Thursday night.

NIE Networks confirmed crews are working to restore electricity supplies, while hundreds of fallen trees have blocked roads and forced the suspension of rail services.

A major recovery operation is now underway to restore power, reopen roads, and address storm damage. Authorities have warned that disruption is likely to continue into Saturday.

Weather warnings remain in place

The amber wind warning ended at 8pm on Thursday, but the Met Office has kept a Yellow warning for strong winds in force across Northern Ireland until 11:59pm on Saturday, 4 October.

A yellow warning for rain also remains active until midday on Saturday, with the potential to cause further disruption and hamper recovery efforts.

A police spokesperson said:

“We are continuing to urge road users to exercise extra care and attention when driving as surface water, debris or temporary restrictions are a possibility. Many roads are currently impassable due to fallen trees.

“Everyone should avoid unnecessary travel but if you must travel take extra care and please reduce your speed.”

Safety warnings from NIE Networks

NIE Networks has again stressed the importance of public safety, urging people to stay well clear of any fallen power lines or damaged electrical equipment. Members of the public are being asked to report incidents immediately.
