A 28-year-old Portadown man has been sentenced to six months in prison after throwing a bottle at a police Land Rover during disorder linked to the Drumcree/Garvaghy Road dispute.
Malachy McCann was sentenced at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday 9 October, having been convicted of disorderly behaviour and attempted criminal damage.
The offences followed an incident on the Garvaghy Road on Sunday 27 September, when McCann stepped out from a crowd and targeted a police vehicle.
Police describe incident on Garvaghy Road
Detective Chief Inspector Michelle Griffin said:
“On Sunday, 27th September McCann stepped out from a crowd on the Garvaghy Road and threw a bottle at a police Land Rover.
“He then threw his arms up in the air and shouted in a provocative manner before being led away by the crowd.
“McCann left the scene but was later arrested by officers at his home address.”
Six-month sentence sends warning over disorder
DCI Griffin said:
“This sentence reflects the seriousness with which this type of disorder is treated. Attacks on police officers and vehicles are wholly unacceptable, and we will take robust action against anyone involved in criminal behaviour.”
The custodial sentence follows McCann’s conviction for disorderly behaviour and attempted criminal damage, while police inquiries into the wider incident remain ongoing.
Police appeal for footage and information
DCI Griffin added:
“Our investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information, CCTV, dash-cam or mobile phone footage is asked to contact police on 101. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.”
The court outcome brings McCann’s case to a conclusion, but detectives are continuing to seek information and footage that could assist their investigation into the September disorder.
