Police have launched an investigation following reports of a suspicious approach targeting a young woman and her child in the bustling Queen Street area of Ballymena.

The incident, which has left the local community on edge, occurred on Friday evening during daylight hours, prompting a swift response from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and a plea for public assistance.

According to details shared by a family member, the woman and her daughter had just exited the Home Bargains store and were making their way along Queen Street when they were confronted.

A white transit van, occupied by three men described as having foreign accents, pulled up abruptly. One of the men, clad in dark clothing and sporting a dark beard, allegedly leapt out and attempted to grab the young woman.

The family member, speaking in the aftermath of the ordeal, urged residents to remain vigilant, stating: “please be very careful.”

The PSNI confirmed they received a report of the incident around 7pm on Friday, 29th August.

A spokesperson for the police provided further details, emphasising the ongoing nature of the enquiries.

“Police received a report of a suspicious approach in the Queen Street area of Ballymena at around 7pm on Friday, 29th August,” the spokesperson said.

“It was reported that a woman and child walking from commercial premises were approached. Enquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have dashcam or other footage which could assist with our investigation should contact us on 101, quoting reference 1410 29/08/25.”

This unsettling event has heightened concerns about personal safety in the town centre, particularly during evening hours when foot traffic from shops like Home Bargains remains high.

Ballymena, a key hub in County Antrim known for its retail and community vibrancy, rarely sees such reports, making this case particularly alarming for locals.

Authorities have not yet released additional descriptions of the suspects or the vehicle beyond the initial accounts, but the call for dashcam footage underscores the potential value of digital evidence in piecing together the sequence of events.

Witnesses or those with relevant information are encouraged to come forward promptly to aid the investigation.

As enquiries progress, the PSNI’s appeal serves as a reminder of the importance of community cooperation in maintaining public safety.

For anyone with information, the non-emergency line 101 remains the primary point of contact, with the specified reference number ensuring details are directed to the appropriate team. In emergencies, dial 999.
