Mayor, Councillor Peter Johnston, was joined by two eager little helpers to launch Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s programme of World Book Day virtual events on Thursday, March 4.
In a specially recorded video to be shared on Council’s social channels, the Mayor’s sons, Jacob (2) and Lucas (1) watched on in delight as he read their favourite story, ‘That’s not my dinosaur’, by Fiona Watt.
The Mayor encouraged residents of all ages to rediscover their love of reading.
“Reading for pleasure has many benefits promoting creativity, relaxation, improved communication and benefits to mental health.”
Larne Museum and Arts Centre will be virtually celebrating all things literary for World Book Day on Thursday 4 March.
“It is fantastic to see Larne Museum and Arts Centre promote World Book Day, especially as it was a much loved library in Larne for many years”, the Mayor continued.
Inspired by CS Lewis’ quote, “Someday you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again”, the organisers have also planned a literary quiz night aimed at grownups.
Author Stephen Gordon will be speaking on life as a writer and Angeline King will be giving her top ten tips on writing a novel.
As with any good World Book Day event, Larne Museum is encouraging everyone to dress up as their favourite character with an award for the best dressed in an online fancy dress competition – and there will be prizes for kids and adults alike!
As part of the festivities, the organisers have arranged readings by local authors, while Larne Drama Circle will be sharing their favourite characters from famous books.
These events are free to join and videos will be available to watch throughout the day on www.facebook.com/larnemuseum Carrickfergus Museum will also be joining in the fun with a fabulous World Book Day craft competition.
Entrants are asked to watch the fun video on our social media to find out how to make their own ‘Flying Island’, as seen in the much-loved Gulliver’s Travels.
Using materials that will be at hand in most homes or gardens, why not have a go at creating your own little paradise, send us your photos to
by 31 March, and we will share them with our audience.
The winner will be announced on April 2 and will receive a book token.
