A security alert that prompted the closure of Main Street in Randalstown on Thursday evening, 3rd July, has now ended.

Police confirmed that the operation followed a report of a suspicious object in the area, which was later assessed and safely dealt with by ammunition technical officers.

“Ammunition technical officers attended the scene and safely removed a suspected piece of historic munition.”

The Main Street area was cordoned off for several hours as a precaution while the object was examined. Diversions were put in place via Portglenone Road and Ahoghill Road, although no properties were evacuated during the incident.

Following the successful conclusion of the operation, police have confirmed that the area has now fully reopened to both road users and the public.

“The Main Street area has fully reopened to road users and members of the public.”

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) expressed their gratitude to local residents and businesses for their cooperation during the alert.

“We would like to thank the public, especially local residents, for their patience.”

The object, described as a suspected piece of historic munition, has now been safely removed from the scene, and the incident is no longer being treated as suspicious.
