A Northern Regional College student studying in Ballymena has helped create a short film selected among the top two UK entries in an Into Film programme — an achievement that took him to London to hear from some of the biggest names in entertainment.
Samuel Cairns participated in a question-and-answer panel with representatives from Universal, Disney and Netflix, and was later invited back for an exclusive screening of Tron: Legacy.
Now, having completed his Level 2 Creative Media Traineeship, he has returned to the college’s Ballymena campus to study the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Creative Media Practice, with ambitions to work in filmmaking and screenwriting.
Growing confidence and a proud achievement
Alongside developing his creative skills, Samuel has grown in confidence while navigating additional learning needs in a mainstream learning environment, building positive relationships with staff and fellow students.
His progress was recognised at the college’s Student Awards in June, when he received a Highly Commended Award for Demonstrated Growth and Progression.
Samuel said:
“I have really enjoyed my time at Northern Regional College, and completing my Level 2 course has encouraged me to take my education further. I have become much more confident in myself and my abilities, and receiving the Highly Commended Award was a proud moment that showed me how far I have come.”
From the classroom to the film industry
The London visits gave Samuel an opportunity to hear directly from people working in the industry he hopes to join.
“Film and animation are the areas I am most passionate about. The opportunities I have had to visit London and hear directly from people working in the industry have encouraged me to keep developing my skills.”
His Level 3 studies will cover digital video production, graphic design, broadcast journalism, digital radio content production, and web design and development.
“I am excited to begin Level 3, learn more about the different career paths available within creative media and continue working towards my future. After completing Level 3, I hope to pursue a career in filmmaking and screenwriting.”
Support for classmates and determination to progress
Samuel’s lecturer, Niall Meighan, highlighted both his progress and the support he offers other students.
He said:
“Samuel has made tremendous progress during his time at Northern Regional College. He is a modest, caring and respectful student who consistently meets deadlines and is always willing to offer support and guidance to his classmates.
“His confidence has grown significantly, and he has shown real resilience and determination throughout his studies. Samuel has a genuine enthusiasm for filmmaking, animation and media, and progressing to Level 3 is a natural and well-deserved next step for him. We look forward to seeing him continue to develop his talents and work towards his ambitions within the creative industries.”
Building towards a creative career
The diploma offers practical experience with industry-standard equipment and software, alongside live projects and opportunities to build a portfolio for higher education or employment. Further information on courses is available at www.nrc.ac.uk.
For Samuel, the next stage is an opportunity to turn his enthusiasm for film and animation into the practical skills and portfolio that can help him pursue his ambition of creating stories for the screen.
