Ulster Unionist MP for South Antrim, Robin Swann, has secured a seat on the Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee, strengthening Northern Ireland’s representation on one of Westminster’s most significant scrutiny bodies.

Mr Swann has taken up one of the Government positions on the committee, a move which reflects his cross-party approach at Westminster and the working relationships he has developed with MPs across the House of Commons.

With his appointment confirmed, all Northern Ireland Executive parties that take their seats at Westminster are now represented on the committee.

The Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee plays a central role in scrutinising the work of the Northern Ireland Office and examining a wide range of political, economic and social issues affecting Northern Ireland.

Its remit includes governance, public services, legacy matters, security, and the operation of devolved institutions.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Swann said the committee offers a vital forum for sustained focus on Northern Ireland within the Westminster timetable.

“The Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee provides dedicated time in the Westminster diary to focus squarely on the issues, challenges and opportunities facing Northern Ireland. I am delighted to have secured this position and look forward to contributing fully to its important work.”

He emphasised that his approach on the committee would be rooted in cooperation and practical outcomes rather than party politics.

“I will be a pragmatic and constructive member of the Committee, working collaboratively across party lines to deliver practical outcomes for people in Northern Ireland.”

Mr Swann also highlighted the significance of unionist representation on the committee, describing his appointment as an opportunity to ensure a broad range of voices are heard at Westminster.

“I am particularly pleased that positive, moderate unionism will now be represented on the Committee, ensuring a balanced and inclusive voice for all those who support Northern Ireland’s place in the United Kingdom.”

For constituents in South Antrim, the appointment brings a direct link into parliamentary scrutiny of Northern Ireland affairs, offering a route for local concerns to be raised within formal Westminster inquiries.

It also underlines the growing emphasis on cross-party engagement at a time when Northern Ireland-specific issues continue to demand sustained political attention at UK level.
