An RNLI lifeguard celebrating his 18th birthday became a lifesaving hero on Wednesday afternoon (7 August) after rescuing a swimmer in distress at Portstewart Strand.

Cohan Currie-Laverty was on duty patrolling the busy Causeway Coast beach when he spotted a swimmer struggling in a strong rip current. Without hesitation, Cohan launched into the water with his rescue board and reached the woman just as she began to panic and struggle to keep her head above the waves.

After placing the swimmer safely onto his rescue board, Cohan offered reassurance, helping her to remain calm and focus on her breathing. Instead of returning to the main strand, he made the decision to guide the rescue to nearby Bailey’s Beach, a smaller and closer cove.

Once safely ashore, Cohan conducted an assessment. The swimmer, though clearly shaken by the ordeal, thankfully did not require any further medical attention.

Speaking after the rescue, Cohan emphasised the dangers of rip currents and urged the public to remember RNLI’s lifesaving advice:

“This incident highlights how strong rip currents are. Rips can catch even the most experienced beachgoers out so if you do find yourself in trouble, Float to Live.

“Knowing this technique and encouraging your family to practice it could save your life: Tilt your head back, with your ears submerged. Relax and try to breathe normally. Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat if you need to. It’s fine if your legs sink – we all float differently.

“By doing this, you give yourself the chance to rest and recover your breathing. Once you’ve regained control of your breathing, you can call for help or swim to safety.”

Reflecting on the day’s events, the newly-turned 18-year-old said:

“It’s a nice way to celebrate my 18th birthday, by helping others. I’ll definitely remember this birthday for the rest of my life.”

Cohan’s swift action and calm response underline the vital role of RNLI lifeguards in keeping beachgoers safe across the UK and Ireland.
