The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has issued a public safety advisory following a Met Office Amber weather warning for very strong winds across parts of Northern Ireland this afternoon and evening.
The warning, valid from 3pm until 8pm today, Friday 3 October, applies to the north and west of Northern Ireland, covering counties Fermanagh, Londonderry, much of Tyrone and north and west Antrim.
The PSNI has urged the public to take the alert seriously, warning that conditions could pose a risk to life, cause widespread travel disruption, and lead to damage to property.
Police Safety Advice
A PSNI spokesperson said:
“Flying debris is likely and could lead to injuries or danger to life. There is also a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage. Damage to buildings, including tiles being blown from roofs, is also possible.”
The advisory warns of serious disruption to daily life as strong winds move across the region:
Transport disruption with longer journey times and cancellations expected across road, rail, air and ferry services.
Road and bridge closures are likely in affected areas.
Coastal risks, with injuries and danger to life possible from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, seafronts and properties.
The PSNI added:
“Traffic disruption is possible and road users are advised to consider whether your journey is necessary. Take extra care if you must travel. Please reduce your speed because of the possibility of surface water and avoid driving through flood water.”
Reporting Incidents
The police are working closely with multi-agency partners to coordinate the response. Members of the public are urged to follow safety guidance and report incidents to the appropriate authorities:
Electricity issues should be reported to NIE Networks on 03457 643 643.
Flooding incidents can be reported to the Flooding Incident Line on 0300 2000 100 (not for emergencies).
In emergencies, the PSNI reminds the public to dial 999 immediately.
Further updates on weather warnings are available from the Met Office, while live traffic information can be accessed at TrafficWatch NI.
The PSNI is urging people to stay away from coastal areas, avoid unnecessary travel, and keep up to date with the latest safety advice.
