Police have warned members of the public not to approach a 29-year-old convicted murderer who is unlawfully at large after failing to return to prison following day release on Monday.


Gary Anderson, who police said was sentenced in 2023 to 15 years for murder, had been on day release from prison on Monday 14 September but had not returned or been apprehended when the appeal was issued.



Public warned not to approach him


The Police Service of Northern Ireland said Anderson is approximately 5ft 11ins tall, of slim build and has brown hair.


A police spokesperson said:


“The 29-year-old, who was sentenced in 2023 to 15 years for murder, was on day release from prison today, Monday 14th September.


“As of this time, Gary - who is approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, of slim build and with brown hair - has still not returned to prison or been apprehended.



“We appeal directly to Gary to hand himself in.


“We would also ask anyone who has seen him, or who knows of his whereabouts, not to approach him directly but to contact police on 101, quoting reference 555 of 14/09/26.”


How to provide information


Anyone who sees Anderson or knows where he may be is being urged not to approach him and instead to contact police immediately on 101, quoting reference 555 of 14/09/26.


Information can also be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Police are continuing efforts to locate Anderson and have appealed directly to him to hand himself in.
