With temperatures soaring over Bank Holiday weekend, and many heading to the coast, the Northern Ireland Roads Policing team have reminded caravaners of the need to heed vehicle towing capacity to stay road legal.
A police spokesperson commented:
“If you are heading off this weekend in your caravan for a well-earned break, please ensure you are road legal! As shown, not all vehicles are capable of towing a caravan of this size.

“You need to check your vehicle handbook for the towing capacity. You can also work it out from the VIN plate shown below, where line one is the maximum allowable mass and line two is the maximum train mass. Simply deduct line one from line two and you have the vehicle towing limit i.e. 3920Kg minus 2270Kg which is 1650Kg.

“Looking at the VIN plate below for the caravan the MTPLM which means Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass is 1798kg so in this case the Toyota Rav4 shown in this picture cannot legally tow this caravan.”
