A police officer has been injured and two people arrested after a stolen car was deliberately rammed into a PSNI patrol vehicle during a late-night incident in Enniskillen.

The incident unfolded shortly before 1am on the Cornagrade Road, as officers on patrol under Operation Season’s Greetings attempted to stop a silver Ford Fiesta acting suspiciously in the area.

Police say that when the vehicle was signalled to stop, the driver instead made off at speed, attempting to escape by driving up a grass verge. When unable to get away, the driver deliberately rammed the stolen car into the police vehicle, injuring the officer who was inside.

Despite sustaining neck and back injuries, the officer remained on duty following the collision.

Two arrests made at the scene

Following the crash, several occupants fled the vehicle on foot. Police arrested a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman at the scene, while two other suspects – a man and a woman – managed to escape and are now the subject of an active police search.

Checks carried out with colleagues in An Garda Síochána confirmed that the Ford Fiesta involved had been stolen in County Cavan earlier the previous evening, highlighting the cross-border nature of the incident.

The two suspects who ran from the scene are described as:

  • Male: believed to be in his 20s, approximately 6ft tall, wearing dark clothing with what is believed to be either a white hood or a white marking on the hood

  • Female: believed to be in her 20s, with blonde hair, wearing a black coat and blue jeans

Fermanagh and Omagh District Commander Pete Cunningham said:

"The deliberate ramming of police vehicles constitutes a serious and continuing threat to our frontline operational capability and to the safety and wellbeing of our officers.

“There must be a lot more awareness of, and praise for, the invaluable and often dangerous work local police officers are doing in communities, and zero tolerance for those who use vehicles to attack them for simply doing their job and keeping people safe."

Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has dashcam, doorbell or other video footage from the Cornagrade Road area around the time of the incident to come forward.
