Officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in Mid and East Antrim stepped in at the last minute to help spread festive cheer, responding to an urgent request “from up North” to support Harryville Men’s Shed in delivering Christmas magic to local children.
In a light-hearted nod to the season, officers said it was a call they simply could not refuse.
“After all you don’t say no to a man who controls the Nice List!”
The visit was part of a community-focused effort to ensure that children experienced the joy of Christmas, even as many families continue to feel the strain of rising living costs.
Officers acknowledged that while their festive “elf-orts” were intended to bring smiles, they were also acutely aware that Christmas can be a challenging and isolating time for many households.
“As happy as we hope our elf-orts make some children, we know Christmas isn’t a merry time for many families,” the statement said.
“The cost of heat, light and food can wipe out the family budget before the added expense of an increasingly long and commercial festive season, it feels like we have been top to toe in tinsel since September.”
The message struck a reflective tone, recognising the emotional pressures that can build during the festive period, particularly for those experiencing financial hardship or grief.
“This pressure can lead to dark days but with hindsight you realise you can’t put a price on time spent together, especially with the folk who are no longer with us.”
At its heart, the initiative underlined a simple but powerful reminder about the true meaning of Christmas.
“People are the true gift of Christmas.”
The PSNI also used the opportunity to highlight the importance of reaching out for help when needed, encouraging anyone who may be struggling to access available support services.
“If you do need a little extra support there are many free resources available, the Here2Help App is a good place to start off.”
The gesture has been warmly received locally, with Harryville Men’s Shed praised for its ongoing work in the community and officers commended for taking time to support families during what can be both a joyful and difficult season.
