Randalstown Viaduct, County Antrim
Police have launched an investigation following reports that vehicles travelling beneath the Randalstown viaduct have been damaged by objects being thrown from the structure.
The authorities have warned that the incidents could have had fatal consequences and are urging public assistance to prevent further danger.
Officers confirmed they are currently pursuing lines of enquiry into the matter and described the behaviour as “irresponsible and reckless”, highlighting the severe risk posed to motorists.
“Even a small stone can shatter a windscreen, obstruct the view of the driver and cause a collision that could result in serious injury or even death,” said a spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
Police are particularly calling on parents and guardians to play an active role in addressing the issue.
“We would ask parents to help us bring an end to such irresponsible and reckless behaviour. Please help us avoid a tragedy by advising your children against becoming involved in this dangerous activity. Try to make sure you know where your children are and what they are up to,” the spokesperson added.
The authorities are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area or who may have information that could assist with the investigation.
“We have received reports that vehicles travelling on the road beneath Randalstown viaduct have been damaged due to items being thrown from the viaduct. Our enquiries into the incidents are continuing,” the police confirmed.
Members of the public who may have seen anything or have relevant information are urged to contact police on 101, quoting the relevant incident details.
