Police have launched an investigation after multiple schools and businesses across County Antrim received a concerning email on Tuesday morning, prompting increased patrols and urgent enquiries by officers.
The PSNI confirmed on Tuesday 19th May that the email had been distributed to a number of locations in the area, sparking concern among parents, staff, businesses and local communities.
Officers are now working to establish the origin and intent behind the message while liaising directly with those affected throughout the day.
Police increase patrols across affected areas
As enquiries continue, reassurance patrols have been stepped up in impacted areas in an effort to maintain public confidence and ensure community safety.
While police have not disclosed the exact contents of the email, the scale of the response underlines the seriousness with which the incident is being treated.
The incident is likely to cause anxiety for families and workers across County Antrim, particularly given the involvement of schools and public-facing businesses.
Police said officers will continue engaging directly with schools, businesses and partner agencies as the investigation develops.
Public urged to remain vigilant
The PSNI has appealed to the public to remain alert and report anything suspicious immediately.
A spokesperson said:
“Police received reports today, Tuesday 19th May, of an email having been sent to multiple schools and businesses in the County Antrim area.
“Officers are investigating the contents included within this email, and are conducting a number of enquiries.
“Reassurance patrols have also been increased in the areas affected, in order help keep our communities safe.
“We would urge anyone to report anything suspicious to police on our 101 number, always 999 in an emergency.
“Police will also be engaging with anyone affected including schools, businesses and our partner agencies throughout the course of today as our enquiries continue.”
Community concern likely as investigation continues
For many parents and employees across County Antrim, the presence of increased police patrols will provide reassurance, but the investigation is expected to remain a significant concern locally until more information is established.
Anyone with information or concerns is urged to contact police on 101, or 999 in an emergency situation.
