Police are appealing for the public’s help to identify a man whose body was discovered on rocks close to Portstewart Prom on Friday 9 October.

Officers believe the man, thought to be in his late 50s or early 60s, may have gone missing within the previous 48 hours and are urging people to check on relatives, friends and neighbours they have not recently seen or heard from.

The man was found without identification or personal belongings that could help police establish who he is.

Police release description of man

Detective Inspector Connolly, from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, has provided a physical description in the hope that someone may recognise the man or know who he could be.

He is described as:

• In his late 50s or early 60s

• Approximately 6ft 3in tall

• Of medium build

• Having short white hair and white stubble

He was wearing:

• Blue jeans

• A black T-shirt

• A blue jumper

• A blue hoody

• A blue puffa jacket

Public urged to check on family and friends

Detective Inspector Connolly said:

“We believe this gentleman may have gone missing within the last 48 hours and we are asking the public to think about any family members, neighbours or friends that they haven’t seen or heard from – and to check that they are safe and well.

“He is in his late 50s or early 60’s, of medium build, 6’3” in height, with short white hair and white stubble. He was wearing blue jeans, a black T-shirt, blue jumper, a blue hoody and a blue puffa jacket.

“Unfortunately he did not have any identification or other personal items with him that could help with identification.”

Death not being treated as suspicious

Police have confirmed that a post-mortem examination has been carried out.

Detective Inspector Connolly said:

“A post mortem has been carried out and we are not treating the death as suspicious at this time.”

How to contact police

Anyone who believes they may know the man’s identity, or has information that could assist officers, is asked to contact police.

Detective Inspector Connolly said:

“If anyone believes that they can help identify this gentleman or if you have information that could help with our enquiries, please contact us on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 374 09/10/26.”

Police are particularly encouraging people to consider anyone they would normally expect to have heard from, but who has been unexpectedly out of contact. Even a small piece of information could help officers establish the man’s identity and contact his family.
