Police appeal after distraction burglary at Co Antrim home of woman in her 90s

Police are appealing for information following a report of a distraction burglary at a house in the Jordanstown Road area of Newtownabbey yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, 31 March).
Detective Constable McGrugan said:
“Just before 4pm, it was reported that two men called to the home of a woman, aged in her nineties, and claimed they were there to carry out maintenance.
“One male entered the property and went upstairs and into a room. When the homeowner raised the alarm, the suspect pushed past her and left the property.
“Officers subsequently arrested two men, aged 28 and 35 years old, on suspicion of burglary. Both men remain in custody, assisting with our enquiries.
“This would have been a distressing ordeal for the victim, and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity at the time of the incident to contact us on 101, quoting reference number 1298 of 31/03/21.”

Detective Constable McGrugan added:
“I am appealing for anyone who has had similar calls to follow this advice when answering the door.
Report suspicious persons or vehicles being driven in a suspicious manner immediately
Before answering the front door, make sure the back door is locked.
If you have a door chain, remember to use it before opening the door. If not, we recommend you get one installed.
Ask the caller for their identification and check it carefully.
Ask them to wait outside and close the door - genuine callers will not mind.
Ring Quick Check on 101. The call will be answered personally and promptly by a trained police call handler. They will check with the company that the person at the door is genuine. If they are not or they think that there is something suspicious, the operator will be able send the police to you.
Do not let anyone into the property until you are satisfied as to who they are.”
