It might only be April, but plans are already being prepared for Christmas 2022, with festivities set to be discussed at a meeting of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s Policy and Resources Committee this evening.

The matter was previously discussed at a meeting of the committee in March, but was deferred after Officers were requested to reconsider the proposed dates, possibly holding Ballymena and Carrickfergus switch on events on the same date.

It was agreed that business owners be consulted on the festive proposals and members highlighted the importance of shops/cafes being open during the switch on events in order to increase footfall and spend.

Officers were also requested to examine options in respect of the Christmas lights in Ballymena and the Director agreed that this would be undertaken.

Meanwhile, Councillor Peter Johnston requested that Officers ensure that a Christmas lights switch on event be held in Greenisland.

It was emphasised in the meeting that the festive plans retain a focus on the Christian message of Christmas.
