Person winched to safety after falling off cliff at Mussenden Temple




A rescue operation was mounted on Monday night, 22 August, after a person fell from a cliff close to Mussenden Temple, Castlerock.


Shortly before 10pm last night, officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, who had located the casualty, requested the assistance of HM Coastguard at the scene of the incident.



A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said:


“HM Coastguard received a request for assistance from Northern Ireland Police to an incident near Mussenden Temple shortly before 10pm last night (22 August).


“Coastguard rescue teams from Coleraine and Ballycastle along with the coastguard helicopter from Prestwick were sent to help.”



Coleraine Coastguard stated on Tuesday morning that a ‘rope rescue technician was lowered to stabilise and assess the casualty, before the injured person was winched to safety and flown to Causeway Hospital by the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter, R199 from Prestwick’.


Police have confirmed that the woman’s injuries, although serious, are not believed to be life-threatening.
