Pedestrian left fighting for life after hit-and-run as man arrested

A 28-year-old man remains in a critical condition in hospital after being struck by a car during the early hours of Sunday morning in what police are treating as a serious hit-and-run collision.


The incident happened at around 1.50am on Sunday, June 28, in the vicinity of Market Square in Dromore.


Police say the man was struck by a black Toyota Yaris which then left the scene.



Man remains in critical condition


Emergency services were dispatched to the area following reports of the collision, with officers attending alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.


The injured pedestrian was taken to hospital for treatment where he remains in a critical condition.


Driver arrested shortly afterwards


A 20-year-old man was arrested a short time later in connection with the incident.


He was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and driving with excess alcohol.



The man remains in police custody while enquiries continue.


Police have not released further details about the circumstances leading up to the collision or the direction in which the vehicle travelled after leaving the scene.


Police appeal for witnesses and footage


Investigators are now urging anyone who was in the Market Square area around the time of the collision to come forward.


Officers are particularly keen to hear from motorists who may have been driving in the area and could have captured footage on dash-cams, as well as anyone with mobile phone footage that could assist enquiries.



Inspector Woods said:


“We received a report at around 1.50am of a road traffic collision in the vicinity of Market Square, Dromore. It was reported a pedestrian had been struck by a black Toyota Yaris, which then made off from the scene.


“Officers attended, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. A 28 year-old man was subsequently taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.


“A 20 year-old man was arrested a short time later on suspicion of a number of offences including dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol and is currently in police custody.”



Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and are asking anyone who may have information, footage or who witnessed what happened to make contact.


The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to establish the full sequence of events that led to the collision in the centre of Dromore during the early hours of Sunday morning.
