North Antrim DUP MLA Paul Frew has issued a strong call to action in the Northern Ireland Assembly, urging the Government to move swiftly and decisively to address rising fears over the safety of women and girls, following two serious sexual assaults reported in Ballymena.
In a statement delivered at Stormont on Monday, Mr Frew expressed deep concern over what he described as a growing crisis in community safety, emphasising the need for “joined up Government action” to prevent further harm and rebuild public trust.
“As an elected representative, I have campaigned hard to modernise legislation to better protect women and girls,” Mr Frew said. “While significant progress has been made, each week we are confronted with fresh examples that demonstrate how far we still have to go.”
The urgency of his remarks came in the wake of the reports of two shocking incidents involving the serious sexual assault of teenage girls in Ballymena in recent weeks. Both attacks took place in broad daylight, prompting widespread alarm and a surge in community unease.
“In North Antrim, and particularly in Ballymena, I have consistently raised the alarm that people are living in fear,” Frew continued. “Sadly, my warnings have been followed by two shocking incidents of serious sexual assault on teenage girls, carried out in broad daylight.”
While the MLA refrained from commenting in detail due to the ongoing nature of the investigations, he made it clear that the emotional and psychological impact on the local community was significant.
“The shock and fear felt across the community is real and widespread,” he said. “We must see justice done for these heinous crimes. Women and girls must be protected from those who wish them harm.”
Frew’s comments come amid wider concerns around the impact of Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and illegal immigration in certain areas, particularly in relation to law enforcement and safeguarding failures.
“The PSNI and statutory agencies need to urgently get to grips with the challenges arising in Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and the wider consequences of illegal immigration,” he stated.
“These are sensitive but serious issues, and Government must not look the other way.”
He concluded with a firm demand that the Government prioritise women’s safety, insisting that failure to act only heightens risk and diminishes faith in public institutions.
“Safe streets are a must. The Government must stop dithering and act now. Failure to do so puts more women and girls at risk and further erodes public trust.”
Mr Frew’s remarks echo a rising chorus of voices calling for better protective measures for women and girls across Northern Ireland, as communities reel from a series of disturbing incidents that have sparked protests and renewed calls for policy reform.

Deputy Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Tyler Hoey
Deputy Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Tyler Hoey (DUP), also added his voice following the horrific incidents.
“First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers are with the young girl and her family during this incredibly distressing time.
“Once again, Ballymena has been left shocked and heartbroken by devastating news over the weekend. Young women should feel safe, supported, and secure in their own community — and it is deeply troubling that this is not the case.
“I understand a protest is due to take place this evening, and I fully support the right of individuals to express their views peacefully and respectfully. However, I would strongly urge the public to avoid speculation on social media, which could cause further distress to the victim and her family.
“I sincerely hope that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice. The PSNI has my full support as they work to gather the evidence required to ensure accountability.
“It is particularly disheartening that this appalling incident occurred in such close proximity to the police station. I would urge the PSNI to urgently increase their presence in the area to provide greater reassurance and protection for the community.”
Following events of the weekend, tonight’s Council meeting, set to have taken place in The Braid, Ballymena, has been cancelled.
