Patients at Antrim Area Hospital are now benefiting from faster, more accurate diagnoses thanks to a state-of-the-art multifunctional gamma camera, one of only two in Northern Ireland.
Installed last year, the scanner combines CT and nuclear imaging in a single device, enabling healthcare professionals to detect diseases at an earlier stage, tailor treatments to individual patients, and reduce the need for multiple scans.
Marie Harvey, Lead Radiographer for Nuclear Medicine, said:
“I have worked in nuclear medicine for over 30 years, and to now have this machine which includes both CT and Nuclear capabilities, has been ground-breaking for us and our patients.
“We’re able to diagnose conditions faster, and we’re seeing improved outcomes and enhanced comfort for those in our care.”
The scanner works by using small amounts of radioisotopes, delivered daily from countries such as the Netherlands and Poland.
These isotopes allow the gamma camera to produce detailed images of organs and tissues, helping doctors to diagnose conditions including cancer, heart disease, and certain neurological disorders.
For patients, the new technology means shorter waiting times, less stress, and more personalised care.
For the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, it marks a major milestone in delivering innovative healthcare solutions across Northern Ireland.
