Families arriving at hospital in moments of crisis are being offered small acts of comfort thanks to a community initiative — but supplies are now running low.

Northern Health and Social Care Trust (NHSCT) has issued an urgent appeal for donations to help replenish its “comfort packs”, which are given to relatives who unexpectedly find themselves staying with a seriously unwell loved one.

These packs, made up of basic everyday essentials, are designed to ease the immediate stress and uncertainty families face during some of their most difficult moments.

Essential items urgently needed

The Trust says it relies heavily on the kindness and generosity of the local community to keep the initiative going — but stocks are now running low.

Items currently needed include:

  • Face cloths

  • Deodorant

  • Wipes

  • Travel-size shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste

  • Toothbrushes

  • Combs and hairbrushes

  • Pens

Small or travel-sized items are particularly useful, as they are easier to store and distribute within the packs.

Supporting families when they need it most

Comfort packs are offered to people who arrive at hospital without time to prepare, often during emergencies or sudden illness involving a loved one.

By providing basic hygiene items and essentials, the packs aim to bring a small sense of dignity and reassurance during what can be an overwhelming and emotional experience.

The Trust has thanked the community for its continued support, emphasising that donations play a vital role in ensuring families are cared for beyond clinical treatment.

Where to drop off donations

Donations can be made at several locations across the Northern Trust area:

  • Causeway Hospital – Main reception (9am–1pm)

  • Antrim Area Hospital – Macmillan Unit

  • Spruce House, Ballymena (FAO Margaret Diamond)

  • Whiteabbey Hospital – McCaughey House reception (9am–5pm)

  • Mid Ulster Hospital – Condition Management/Palliative Care Office, Thompson House

Community kindness makes the difference

The appeal highlights the quiet but powerful role local people play in supporting families during times of crisis.

Each donated item, no matter how small, helps ensure that those facing unexpected hospital stays are met not just with medical care, but with compassion and practical support when they need it most.
