Ballymena Congregational Church confirmed on Tuesday afternoon (June 28) that it has no plans to relocate or to sell the 126-year-old church building.
The local church congregation, based at Kinhilt Street in the town, was responding after Love Ballymena revealed on Monday evening that trustees had make an outline planning application for a new apartment complex on the site of the house of worship.
The new complex of ten, two-bedroom apartments would ultimately mean the demolition of the current landmark building that was constructed in 1896.

A spokesperson for Ballymena Congregational Church said:
“The planning application is a practical way to gather information about the potential value or use of our property, which was first erected in 1896. Possessing this information and options is prudent for both the present and future.
“There has been no decision made to sell or relocate – any such considerations are always in the hands of the members and the will of God.
“More-so, the church is not closing, but remains healthy and hearty, materially and spiritually, and continues its work and witness every week, with a sound and faithful congregation and warm welcome to all.
“We will readily share God’s Word and the Gospel and wish your viewers and commentators God’s blessing, but it is not our intention further to share church business online.”
