Land & Property Services has launched a new digital service designed to make it easier for ratepayers across Northern Ireland to manage their rates accounts online.
The new Rates Online platform allows customers to view account details, report changes, make payments and raise queries through a single online portal. Users can also opt to receive their rates bills electronically, reducing paperwork and offering faster access to important information.
The service forms part of a wider push to modernise public services and improve how citizens and businesses interact with government departments.
Finance Minister John O’Dowd said the launch reflects a commitment to more accessible and efficient public services.
“I am committed to transforming the way public services are delivered making it easier and more convenient for citizens and businesses whilst providing a more efficient and effective customer response.
“Supporting ratepayers to make payments easily is a priority and this new facility will allow immediate online access to resolve queries as well as enabling online payment.
“Managing your account has never been easier whether you want to update information, make a payment or simply view details held, this can now be done through Rates Online.”
For many households and businesses, rates payments represent a significant and often stressful annual cost. The introduction of a digital self-service option is expected to reduce delays, cut down on phone and paper correspondence, and give customers greater control over their accounts at a time that suits them.
The Finance Minister also highlighted the wider importance of rates income to everyday public services.
“Rate revenue provides vital funding for hospitals, childcare, schools, and other essential public services that support our communities.”
Encouraging widespread take-up of the service, Mr O’Dowd added:
“I would encourage everyone to register for this service and look forward to further service improvements planned within Land & Property Services.”
Ratepayers can register and set up an account through the nidirect website at:
For busy families, older residents and small business owners juggling rising costs, the ability to check balances, update details and resolve issues online offers a practical step towards simpler, more transparent interaction with government services—without the need for lengthy phone calls or paperwork.
