New colour-coded dog control signs rolled out across Antrim and Newtownabbey

Dog owners across Antrim and Newtownabbey are being urged to check the rules before exercising their pets in council-managed parks and open spaces, as new colour-coded signage is installed across the borough.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is carrying out the work in phases, with priority locations being targeted first.

The signs are designed to make it clearer where dogs can be exercised freely, where they must be kept on a lead and where they are prohibited — with owners who breach Dog Control Orders potentially facing a penalty of up to £1,000.

Different rules for different locations

Depending on the park, open space or other council-managed location, the new signs will show where:

• dogs are permitted and may be exercised off lead;

• dogs must be kept on a lead;

• dogs are not permitted; or

• other specific dog control requirements apply.

The phased rollout means new signs will not necessarily be in place at every affected location immediately.

While installation continues, owners are being advised not to rely solely on signage and to check the council’s online maps to establish the rules applying to an area before exercising their dog there.

Owners urged to check before visiting

The Dog Control Orders are intended to promote responsible dog ownership while allowing council spaces to be used safely by dog owners and other members of the public.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Henry Cushinan, said:

“This signage will act as a key guideline for all dog owners and ensure the Borough can be enjoyed by all residents and visitors. It is important that dog owners familiarise themselves with the new signs and follow them with due care and attention.”

With different restrictions applying according to location, dog owners are encouraged to check the requirements before entering an area and to watch for the new colour-coded signs as installation progresses.
