A murder investigation has been launched after three members of the same family were found dead at a house in Ballymena on Monday morning.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team are leading the investigation after the bodies of a man and two women were discovered at a property on the Old Cullybackey Road at around 9am.

Police have stressed that there is no ongoing risk to the public and that they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the deaths.

Major investigation under way

Mid and East Antrim District Commander Superintendent William Calderwood said the deaths are now being treated as a murder investigation, although the exact causes of death have yet to be established.

He said:

“The bodies of a male and two females were discovered at a home on the Old Cullybackey Road at around 9am this morning, Monday 13th July.

“The cause of death has not yet been formally established and post-mortem examinations will take place in due course. As such, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time, and I would ask that the public avoid speculation.

“However, I want to reassure the public that we do not believe that there is any ongoing risk, and at this stage we are not seeking anyone else in relation to the deaths.

“Our thoughts this evening are very much with the family and friends of those who have died.”

The launch of a murder investigation marks a significant development in the case. Detectives are now carrying out detailed enquiries while awaiting the results of post-mortem examinations.

The Cullybackey Road and Old Cullybackey Rosd remained closed for much of today as police forensic teams and detectives carried out investigations.

Police have confirmed both roads have now reopened to traffic on Monday evening.

Community left in shock

North Antrim MP Jim Allister described the deaths as a tragedy that has deeply affected the local community.

He said:

“The triple deaths in Ballymena are a tragedy causing great shock in the community.

“Though details remain scant, clearly there are family and friends who have suffered huge loss.

“The police have confirmed to me there is no ongoing risk in the community and no further persons are being sought.

“More details will follow. Sincere condolences to all affected.”

Alliance North Antrim MLA Sian Mulholland also expressed her sympathy, saying the discovery had left many people struggling to come to terms with the news.

She said:

“While details continue to emerge about this incident, it is clear there has been a tragedy.

“The community in Ballymena is in shock already and my thoughts are with everyone affected by what will be an incredibly distressing time, particularly the family and friends of the deceased.

“I have spoken to police, who will need time to investigate this matter, and I urge anyone with information to give it to them immediately.”

Investigation continues

Police have not released the identities of those who died and have asked the public to avoid speculation while enquiries continue.
