Murder investigation launched after man found dead and child seriously injured in Co Tyrone

Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a man was found dead alongside a seriously injured child in Dungannon.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team is investigating the incident in the Lisnahull Road area of the Co Tyrone town today, Saturday 29 August.

A male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and remains in police custody.

Child seriously injured

Police confirmed that the man was found dead alongside a child who had sustained serious injuries.

No further details have yet been released about the identities or ages of those involved, the nature of the child’s injuries or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, police said officers were at the scene of what was initially described as a “serious assault” in the Lisnahull Road area.

Members of the public were asked to avoid the area while enquiries continued.

Major Investigation Team takes over

The PSNI subsequently confirmed that detectives from its Major Investigation Team had launched a murder investigation.

Police said:

“A male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and remains in police custody at this time.”

The investigation remains at an early stage and police have said a further update will follow in due course.
