Alliance MLA Sian Mulholland has welcomed Ballycastle’s latest accolade as Northern Ireland’s best place to live, calling it a proud moment for the community and a reflection of the town’s unique spirit.

The north Antrim seaside town secured the regional title in the 2026 edition of The Sunday Times Best Places to Live, standing out ahead of Dundrum and Ormeau in south Belfast — both of which were also recognised in the UK-wide guide.

‘An incredibly special place to call home’

Ms Mulholland, who lives in Ballycastle, said the recognition captures what residents have long known — that the town’s true strength lies in its people.

“Ballycastle is an incredibly special place to call home, and it is fantastic to see it recognised in this way. While its natural beauty, from the beaches to the backdrop of Fair Head, is second to none, what truly makes this town stand out is its sense of community.

“Behind the beautiful seaside setting lies something even more important – a genuine warmth, connection and welcome that you feel the moment you arrive. That is what makes Ballycastle such a great place to live, not just visit.”

Tribute to local businesses

The North Antrim MLA also paid tribute to the independent businesses that help shape Ballycastle’s character and appeal.

“Our independent businesses are at the heart of what makes Ballycastle unique. I want to thank all those business owners who work tirelessly to keep our high street vibrant, authentic and full of life. They are a huge part of why people are drawn here and why so many are proud to call it home.”

National recognition for a ‘big, beating heart’

The Sunday Times Best Places to Live Guide — which can be viewed via THE SUNDAY TIMES BEST PLACES TO LIVE — praised Ballycastle for its strong community spirit, thriving independent sector and distinctive character, describing it as a town with a “big, beating heart”.

Judges assess locations across a range of factors including schools, transport, broadband, green spaces and the health of the high street, with a particular focus on places that demonstrate a genuine sense of community.

A repeat success for the north coast town

This marks the second time Ballycastle has received the prestigious title, having previously been named Northern Ireland’s best place to live in 2022.

Ms Mulholland said the recognition reflects the collective effort of the community.

This is a proud moment for North Antrim and a testament to the people who make Ballycastle what it is.”
