Mosside Worshipful Master presenting Danny with a crystal gift to mark 60 years in the band and leading the local lodge
At the age of 76, Danny Hickinson remains a vibrant cornerstone of the Mosside Rising Sons of Ulster Accordion Band, an ensemble he helped found six decades ago in the heart of County Antrim.
From the rolling green landscapes of Mosside, a village framed by iconic landmarks such as the Dark Hedges, White Park Bay, and the historic Bushmills Distillery – the world’s oldest licensed distillery – Danny’s life has been a testament to tradition, community, and the enduring power of music.
Born and raised in this picturesque corner of Northern Ireland, near Ballycastle and Ballymoney, Danny’s connection to his homeland runs deep. In 1963, he played a pivotal role in transforming a local flute band into the Mosside Rising Sons of Ulster Accordion Band, a group that has since become a cultural institution in the region.
Under the tutelage of Sammy Stevenson from the Vow Accordion Band, Danny mastered the accordion – a skill he has honed over the decades and continues to share with pride as he marches alongside his fellow band members.
The band’s debut parade in 1964, leading LOL 1173, marked the beginning of a proud tradition that endures to this day.

Each year, the Rising Sons of Ulster take to the streets for key events, most notably the Twelfth of July celebrations, a cornerstone of Ulster’s cultural calendar commemorating the Battle of the Boyne.
Mosside band’s unmistakable sound has become a cherished part of the festivities at the local parades.
Over the past 60 years, the band has been a fixture at civic events, community gatherings, and annual cancer fundraising parades, bringing people together through music and shared purpose. Rehearsals at Mosside Orange Hall remain a hub of activity, where the group’s commitment to preserving their musical legacy is as strong as ever.
Danny’s dedication to the band is matched only by his lifelong service to his community. Despite a career in the construction industry, spanning North Antrim and Londonderry, he has never wavered in his loyalty to the Rising Sons of Ulster. His passion for music is complemented by an equally fervent love of football. A devoted supporter of Coleraine Football Club and a lifelong follower of Manchester City, Danny rarely misses a match, proudly donning the sky blue of the Cityzens as he cheers them on in Premier League and European competitions.
As the Mosside Rising Sons of Ulster Accordion Band celebrates its 60th anniversary, Danny and his fellow members are looking to the future. The band is actively seeking new recruits to carry forward their proud tradition, inviting both beginners and experienced musicians to join their ranks.
“Whether you’ve never picked up an accordion or you’re a seasoned player, there’s a place for you,” Danny says warmly. “This band is about community, music, and keeping our heritage alive.”
For those inspired to make music and become part of a group with deep roots in Mosside’s cultural fabric, now is the perfect time to step forward. The Rising Sons of Ulster Accordion Band offers not just an opportunity to learn and perform, but a chance to join a legacy that has thrived for six decades – and, with Danny Hickinson’s enduring spirit, shows no sign of slowing down.
