The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Northern Ireland for rain and snow, in force from 04:00 to 20:00 on Wednesday 18 February 2026, with disruption to travel possible across the province.
The warning, which impacts all parts of Northern Ireland, highlights the risk of outbreaks of rain, hill snow and strong southeasterly winds throughout the day.
Rain, snow and strong winds forecast across the province
According to the Met Office, an area of rain — falling as snow over some high ground — will move slowly east across much of Northern Ireland during Wednesday before easing later in the day.
Forecasters say the system will be accompanied by strong southeasterly winds, which may gust between 45 and 55mph in places, particularly during the morning.
Rainfall totals of 10–15mm are expected fairly widely, with higher accumulations of 20–30mm possible in some southern and western areas.
Hill snow risk above 250 metres
While many lower-lying areas are likely to see little, if any, lying snow, several centimetres could accumulate on higher ground, chiefly above 250 metres.
The main focus for snowfall is expected to be over the Sperrins during the morning period, where wintry conditions may affect routes across upland areas.
Potential travel disruption on Wednesday
The Met Office warns that the combination of rain, snow on higher routes and strong winds may bring disruption to travel during Wednesday.
Motorists travelling through higher ground, particularly in affected western areas, are advised to allow extra time for journeys and remain alert to changing conditions as the weather system moves eastwards during the day.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later on Wednesday evening as the rain clears.
