The Met Office has issued an updated yellow weather warning for rain covering Northern Ireland, with heavy rainfall and strong winds forecast to bring the risk of flooding and disruption on Tuesday 27 January.
The warning is in effect from 02:00 until 21:00 on Tuesday, as a spell of unsettled weather moves across the region.
Outbreaks of rain are expected to spread across Northern Ireland during the early hours, with some of the precipitation possibly falling as snow for a time on higher ground before turning increasingly showery later in the day.
Forecasters say rainfall totals of 15–25mm are likely fairly widely, while 40–60mm is possible on high ground, particularly in eastern areas.
With the ground already saturated following recent wet weather, the Met Office has warned that surface water flooding is possible, especially in low-lying and poorly drained locations.
The rain will be accompanied by strong east to south-easterly winds, adding to the potential for disruption. Inland areas, particularly across the north and east, could see gusts of 40–50mph, while exposed coastal locations may experience gusts of 60–70mph.
The combination of heavy rain and strong winds could lead to difficult travel conditions, with the potential for delays on roads and public transport, as well as localised flooding affecting homes and businesses.
Motorists are being urged to take extra care, particularly during the morning commute.
There may also be impacts for rural communities and those living in upland or coastal areas, where stronger winds and heavier rainfall could exacerbate existing issues such as waterlogged fields, overflowing drains and fallen debris.
The Met Office is advising people to take sensible precautions, including allowing extra time for journeys and checking local flood guidance where relevant.
