Two Ballymena police officers found themselves taking on an unexpected role when they helped deliver a baby in the back of a car after being flagged down by an expectant father in the early hours of the morning.

The two constables were approached at around 3.30am on Friday 9 October, when it became clear there was no time for the family to reach hospital before their baby arrived.

Instead, the officers stepped in to help the mother safely welcome her little boy, Benedykt, into the world in the back of the vehicle.

An unexpected arrival

Following the delivery, the officers used a high-visibility police jacket to help keep mum and baby warm while they waited for colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service to arrive.

Although the new mum had been hoping for a water birth, her little boy clearly had other plans.

Thankfully, both mother and baby are doing well following their unexpected roadside delivery.

A special reunion with baby Benedykt

The heartwarming story didn't end there, as the two officers recently returned to visit the family and meet the little boy they had helped bring into the world.

During the reunion, they congratulated Benedykt's proud mum and dad, along with his two big brothers, on the family's newest arrival.

Sharing the happy news, the Police Service of Northern Ireland welcomed Benedykt as its newest recruit and praised the officers for stepping up when the family needed them most.

The unusual call-out has given the two constables a memorable story from their time on duty, and one Ballymena family a remarkable tale to share with Benedykt as he grows up.
