The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Councillor Peter Johnston, has expressed his sympathy following the passing of Norman Houston OBE, former Director of the Northern Ireland Bureau in Washington.

Mr Houston, originally from Larne, spent 12 years with the Bureau, which works to strengthen links between political, economic, educational, and cultural interests in Northern Ireland and North America.

Only last year, Mr Houston took up the role of CEO of Co-operation Ireland North America.

“I was shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Norman Houston OBE, a man who has been remembered as an extraordinary public servant and one of Northern Ireland’s greatest ambassadors.

“Despite reaching the highest success in his career, Norman was humble and welcoming to all those he met, from all walks of life.

“He remained true to his roots as a Larne man, and I would like to extend my sympathy on behalf of the people of Mid and East Antrim Borough, to Norman’s family and friends at this time.

“I also send my deepest condolences to Norman’s former colleagues at the Northern Ireland Bureau in Washington, and at Co-operation Ireland North America.”
