Mid and East Antrim councillors have underlined commitment to supporting the historic conservation of Carrickfergus.
The borough council’s Performance Improvement Plan says that up to 10 buildings of historical and archaeological interest including eight existing schemes will be restored by March 31 2023.
A report to councillors stated that this could be achieved through the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) with the council and Heritage Lottery grant assistance.
The THI is an ambitious regeneration scheme for the town’s Conservation Area, supported by £1.55million in funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and £0.55 million from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.
Dobbins Inn Hotel at High Street in Carrick town centre has benefited from the initiative as well as the former Warrant Officer’s house and guard room at Antrim Street.
As a result of the initiative, the local authority believes that the local community will have a “better understanding of built heritage”.

It is anticipated that the development will lead to increased inward investment and employment opportunities related to heritage and tourism growth.
Meanwhile the lease of the former town hall caretaker’s house at Antrim Street to a group working to improve mental health in the community has been approved.
Councillors were told that the premises has been vacant for “some time” following refurbishment.
They also heard that there had been potential interest from the Shopmobility charity.
During the discussion, which took place at a meeting of the council’s Policy and Resources Committee behind closed doors, minutes stated that there was “discussion on the unsuitability of the building to facilitate mobility scooters”.
On the proposal of Knockagh Councillor Peter Johnston, seconded by Carrickfergus Castle councillor Alderman Billy Ashe, it was agreed to let the premises for three years to the community group which had expressed initial interest.
