Police step up speed enforcement in rural areas including Townhill Road, Portglenone after concerns were raised over speeding vehicles and child safety
Fresh police action targeting speeding drivers in Portglenone and The Grange has been welcomed as a “necessary message” to protect children and residents, following growing fears over road safety in the area.
TUV Alderman Stewart McDonald has praised the PSNI for carrying out speed enforcement activity in The Grange and Townhill Road areas, describing it as a direct response to concerns raised by the community.
Residents’ fears over speeding
According to Alderman McDonald, the move comes after increasing anxiety among local families about vehicles travelling at excessive speeds through residential streets.
“These are areas where there are clear and ongoing worries about excessive speed, particularly given the number of children in the area,” he said.
“Parents and residents generally have been increasingly anxious about the risks and rightly so.”

The presence of speed cameras and enforcement patrols is seen as a visible attempt to address those concerns and deter dangerous driving.
“Strong message” on road safety
McDonald said he had raised the issue directly with police and welcomed the swift response.
“I raised this matter directly with the PSNI and I am pleased to see a visible and practical response,” he said.
“The deployment of speed cameras sends a strong and necessary message that road safety must be taken seriously.”
Calls for long-term action

While welcoming the enforcement activity, the Alderman stressed that continued action will be essential to ensure lasting improvements.
“However, this cannot be a one off exercise,” he added.
“I will continue to engage with the PSNI to ensure that enforcement is sustained and that longer-term measures are considered to protect those living in the area.”
He also issued a direct appeal to motorists, urging them to take greater responsibility when driving through residential and school routes.
“The safety of our children must always come first and I would urge all drivers to slow down, respect the speed limits and recognise the responsibility they carry.”
Community safety remains priority

The enforcement operation highlights wider concerns around road safety in residential parts of Mid and East Antrim, particularly in areas with high numbers of young families.
For many in Portglenone, the increased police presence offers reassurance—but also a reminder that lasting change will depend on consistent enforcement and driver behaviour.
