The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Councillor Peter Johnston, will lend his support to this year’s Organ Donation Week. The annual campaign which promotes organ donation widely throughout the UK, takes place this year from Monday 7 – Sunday 13 September 2020. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the change in law on organ donation, to encourage people to make a decision about organ donation, and to share that with family and friends.
The Mayor, said: “Mid & East Antrim Borough Council are once again pleased to support Organ Donation Week.
Highlighting this important issue can help transform the lives of those currently waiting for life-changing transplants.
Organ Donation Week is a good opportunity to take some time to think about it, make a decision and share it with a close family member or friend."
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Organ Donation Week will be digitally focused and unable to support events that encourage large numbers of people to gather. Anyone planning events that are social distancing friendly should contact organisers at marketing.comms@nhsbt.nhs.uk.
The current legislation for Northern Ireland is to opt into organ and tissue donation; you can do this by joining the NHS Organ Donation Register and sharing your decision with your family. You can also record a decision not to be a donor or nominate up to two representatives to make the decision for you. These could be family members, friends, or other people you trust.
