A man was taken to hospital after being stabbed during a motorcycle event in Carrickfergus on Wednesday evening, prompting a major police appeal for witnesses and footage from members of the public.

Detectives said the incident happened in the Rodgers Quay area of the town shortly after 7.30pm during the popular ‘Storming the Castle’ bike meet near Carrickfergus Castle.

Police said the victim suffered a stab wound to the chest along with head injuries following an altercation at the event.

The suspect is understood to have fled the scene on the back of a motorbike immediately afterwards.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment. Police said the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this stage.

Police appeal for witnesses and footage

Detective Inspector Lenaghan said officers believe a significant number of people were in the area when the violence broke out.

“Shortly after 7.30pm, officers attended the Rodgers Quay area of the town following a report that a man had been stabbed in the chest and also received injuries to his head,” he said.

“The male suspect was said to have fled the scene on the back of a motorbike following the altercation.

“He is described as being approximately six feet in height, of medium build, and aged in his 40s.

“There were a large number of people in the area at the time of the incident, and we would urge anyone who can assist us with our enquiries, or who has any information which could help, to get in touch.

“Police are aware that this incident occurred at an event which takes place on a regular basis, and generally passes off peacefully with no issues.”

The PSNI has urged anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage, helmet camera recordings or mobile phone footage from the area to contact detectives.

The incident has caused shock among attendees and the wider local biking community, with many families regularly attending the event around Carrickfergus Castle during the summer months.

Political concern after violence at family-friendly event

TUV East Antrim chairman Wes Stephenson said he was deeply concerned by reports of the stabbing at what he described as a generally welcoming gathering.

“My family - including the children - have attended this event in the past so I am shocked that such a serious attack should have happened at what is generally a welcoming event,” he said.

“Incidents of this nature cause understandable shock and concern within the wider community. People have the right to feel safe in their own area without fear of violence.

“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have CCTV, dashcam or other footage which could assist the investigation, to bring it forward to the PSNI.”

Alliance Party Councillor Aaron Skinner also expressed concern following the incident on Wednesday night.

“There are terrible reports coming from Carrick tonight, my thoughts are with all of those affected,” he said.

“I’d urge anyone with any information to contact police on 101.”

The attack has raised concern locally given the popularity of the regular motorcycle meet, which attracts bikers and spectators from across East Antrim and beyond.

Event organisers say incident does not reflect biking community

Organisers of the Storming the Castle event said the stabbing did not reflect the values of the wider biking community and thanked emergency responders who attended the scene.

In a statement issued following the incident, organisers said:

“Unfortunately, there was a regrettable incident during the event which in no way reflects the purpose, values, or intentions of this community meet.

“The safety and respect of everyone attending has always been, and will continue to be, our priority.”

They also thanked Northern Ireland’s independent motorcycle ambulance service for its rapid response at the scene and praised members of the public who stepped in to assist.

Organisers added that they would not allow a single violent incident to overshadow years of work building the event and wider motorcycle community.

Investigation ongoing

Police enquiries remain ongoing on Thursday as detectives work to identify and trace the suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1557 of 27/05/26.
