Man rescued from burning vehicle by off-duty fire officer after collision in Ballymena

A man was rescued from a burning vehicle by an off-duty fire officer following a three vehicle road traffic collision in Ballymena on Sunday evening, 5th May.


It is understood the outcome of the collision would have been much worse if not for the brave actions of the fire officer.



Emergency Services rushed to the scene of the incident which occurred after 6:00pm on the Larne Road Link between the Bridge Street junction and the roundabout at Sainsbury’s.

Police were quickly on scene and closed the road, and were soon joined by colleagues from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, Fire Service, and Air Ambulance NI.


A local St John Ambulance team also assisted at the scene.



A spokesperson for Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service commented:


“Fire crews from Ballymena station have attended a three vehicle road traffic collision on the Larne Road Link near Sainsburys roundabout.


“Colleagues from the PSNI, NIAS, Air Ambulance and St John's Ambulance also assisted at the scene.


“One male casualty was rescued from the burning vehicle due to the quick actions of an off duty firefighter.”


The condition of those involved in the collision is currently unknown.
