A 21-year-old man from Ballymena has been jailed for his role in a violent, race-motivated disturbance that took place in the town’s Clonavon area earlier this year.

Jake Quigley was sentenced at Antrim Crown Court today, Wednesday 12th November, for his involvement in the large-scale disorder on 9th June. He received a two-year custodial sentence, followed by two years on licence.

The incident, described by police as “shameful scenes”, saw significant damage caused to homes, cars, roads and local businesses as violence erupted in the area.

Chief Inspector Michael O’Loan said:

“In shameful scenes, there was large-scale disorder by people intent on causing harm. Damage was caused to roads, homes, cars and local business premises with people left fearing for their lives.”

He added that police officers came under sustained attack during the unrest.

“Our officers came under attack and many left injured after petrol bombs, heavy masonry and fireworks were thrown at them,” he said.

Chief Inspector O’Loan reaffirmed the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s commitment to ensuring those responsible face justice.

“At the time, we assured the public that we will work tirelessly to restore calm and ensure that anyone who chooses to take part in this criminality is brought to justice.

“Our dedicated investigation team has worked tirelessly to ensure that those involved are prosecuted – today’s sentencing is one of many over this disorder.”

Police have once again appealed to the public for information on any related or future incidents.

“We would also repeat our appeal to anyone who has been the victim of, or has any information on, any crime to contact police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. We can assure you that we will always act on concerns and information we receive.”

Information can also be submitted online using the non-emergency reporting form at www.psni.police.uk/makeareport. Reports can be made anonymously via Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or visiting www.crimestoppers-uk.org
