Man charged with grievous bodily harm following Ballymena assault

Detectives investigating a serious assault in Ballymena have charged a 20-year-old man in connection with the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.


The assault took place in the Ballymoney Street area of the town on Sunday 22nd June, prompting an urgent police response and subsequent investigation.



In an update issued this afternoon, Monday 23rd June, police confirmed that the man has now been charged with Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent.


He is expected to appear before Antrim Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Ballymena, on Tuesday 24th June.


A police spokesperson stated:


“Detectives investigating a serious assault which occurred in the Ballymoney Street area of Ballymena on Sunday 22nd June, have this afternoon, Monday 23rd June, charged a man to court.



The man, aged 20, has been charged with Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent.


“He is expected to appear before Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena, tomorrow, Tuesday 24th June.”


The Police Service of Northern Ireland also noted that, “as is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”



The investigation follows an earlier appeal from detectives for witnesses and footage, after emergency services responded to a report of an assault around 2.05am on Sunday. One man was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries sustained during the incident.
