A 31-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a reported stabbing in Coleraine town centre.

Detectives investigating the incident in the Railway Road area on Tuesday, 6 October, have also charged the man with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and threats to kill.

Man due before court in Ballymena

The man is due to appear before Coleraine Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Ballymena, on Thursday, 8 October.

As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

The charges follow an incident at around 1.20pm on Tuesday when police received a report that a man in his 30s had sustained injuries during an altercation on Railway Road.

The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment. Police said his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Arrest followed significant police operation

Police initially arrested the 31-year-old on suspicion of attempted murder following what they described as a “significant policing operation”.

Officers said they were not looking for any further suspects, while enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident continued.

Concern following town centre incident

Alliance Coleraine Alderman Yvonne Boyle said following the incident:

“It is extremely concerning to hear of the stabbing incident in Coleraine town centre. I would like to thank the emergency services for their quick response, and I wish the victim of the attack a full and speedy recovery.

“I would urge the public to follow the advice of the PSNI and to avoid the area where possible to give them space whilst they continue to respond to the incident.”

The case is now set to come before the Magistrates’ Court in Ballymena on Thursday, when the 31-year-old is due to face the three charges.
