Man charged after racially-motivated disorder in Ballymena

A 29-year-old man has been charged following disorder in Ballymena on the evening of Monday, 9th June, which police have described as racially motivated.


The man has been charged with riotous behaviour, disorderly behaviour, attempted criminal damage, and resisting police. He is expected to appear before Ballymena Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 3rd July.



In accordance with standard procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.


Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson condemned the incident and confirmed that further investigations are ongoing.


“We are actively working to identify those responsible for last night’s racially-motivated disorder in Ballymena and bring them to justice,” said ACC Henderson.



“Over the coming days, we will have in place a significant policing presence to help protect these communities in Ballymena and prevent any future disorder.”


He urged members of the public to come forward with any relevant information.


“Anyone who has information or who can help identify those responsible is asked to contact police on 101.”



The PSNI has made it clear that support and protection for affected communities remains a priority.
