Two police officers were injured after their vehicle was deliberately rammed during an incident in Maghera on Tuesday night.
The collision occurred at around 10.20pm on Tuesday, 18 November, after police received reports of a van “speeding and swerving dangerously” on the Glenshane Pass.
When officers arrived in the area, the van was observed travelling on the wrong side of the carriageway, heading directly towards oncoming traffic.
Police say the 18-year-old male driver then deliberately drove the van at the police vehicle, ramming it and injuring the officers inside.
Despite the impact, officers were able to bring the van to a tactical stop. The driver attempted to flee on foot but was quickly detained.
He was questioned on suspicion of multiple offences including driving with excess alcohol, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and possession of a Class B controlled drug. Police confirmed he will return for further questioning at a later date.
Mid Ulster District Commander Superintendent Peter Stevenson condemned the attack, describing the incident as deeply distressing for those involved.
“To be inside a vehicle which is deliberately rammed at speed is an extremely scary and traumatising experience for any police officer to go through. It is a testament to the courage of our people that they willingly place themselves in situations where they are at risk, in order to protect members of the public from harm.”
Police enquiries remain ongoing.
