A major resurfacing scheme is set to begin on Shellinghill Road, Cullybackey, with works scheduled to take place from 20 April to 24 April, in a move welcomed as a much-needed upgrade to one of the area’s long-standing road concerns.
The improvement scheme will cover the section of road from the National Speed Limit sign to the railway crossing, addressing what local representatives say has become a road surface far beyond the stage of routine repairs.
TUV Braid councillor Anne Henry confirmed the start date for the works and said the scheme follows sustained efforts to secure a full resurfacing rather than continued patching.
Long-standing concerns over road condition
Councillor Henry said the condition of Shellinghill Road had deteriorated to the point where temporary fixes were no longer sufficient.
She said:
“Delighted to confirm that from 20th - 24th April, a resurfacing scheme will commence on Shellinghill Road, Cullybackey (from the National Speed Limit sign to the railway crossing).”
Highlighting the background to the works, she added:
“This is a project we as a party have been consistently pushing for, as the condition of the road has long gone beyond simple patch repairs and required full resurfacing.”
The announcement is likely to be welcomed by regular road users in the area who have experienced the worsening surface conditions over time.
Disruption expected during works
Motorists are being advised to prepare for temporary disruption while the resurfacing scheme is carried out.
Road users will be directed via clearly signposted alternative routes during the works, with the aim of reducing delays and maintaining traffic flow as smoothly as possible.
Councillor Henry acknowledged the inconvenience but stressed the importance of the improvement project.
She said:
“I appreciate there will be some disruption while these essential works are carried out. I would ask all road users to follow the clearly signposted alternative routes to help minimise delays and keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible.”
Given the road’s position as a key local route in the Cullybackey area, some short-term traffic impact is expected throughout the five-day programme.
Thanks to DFI team
Councillor Henry also thanked the Department for Infrastructure team for progressing the scheme.
She said:
“Thank you for your patience while this much-needed improvement is delivered and thanks to the DFI team for getting this scheme pushed through.”
The resurfacing is expected to provide a significantly improved road surface along the affected stretch, replacing a patchwork of previous repairs with a full renewed carriageway.
For motorists travelling through the area between 20 and 24 April, extra time for journeys may be advisable while the works are completed.
