Local Welding Academy opens in response to regional skills shortage

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s newest community employability outreach Welding Academy in partnership with Rutledge Training, has opened to the public with courses planned to run all year-round.

The focus of the Academy will be to provide participants an opportunity into employment within the welding sector - regardless of age. Over the 10-week period, learners will cover the theoretical and practical applications of different welding techniques while receiving full pre-employment, personal, and social Skills qualifications such as interview technique, employer engagement, CV writing - as well as a guaranteed job interview with a hiring company at the end of the Academy.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor, Peter Johnston said: “We are delighted to partner with Rutledge Training on this initiative and I commend those involved in bringing the Welding Academy to the people of our borough.

“Mid and East Antrim is recognised as the manufacturing heartland of Northern Ireland, with significant strengths in advanced manufacturing, accounting for one in five jobs in the region.

“Collectively we identified a skill shortage in this sector and we are now able to off those interested in this career path the opportunity to learn the skills needed to successfully secure a job within the welding sector.

“Places on the 10 week training course are limited so if you are interested be sure to sign up.”

Alex English, Rutledge Business Development Executive for Larne and Carrick said:

"We, at Rutledge, are over the moon to be able to bring the Welding Academy to the local borough. We have worked long and hard with the council to tailor and provide a programme that will suit a broad range of individuals interested in entering a career in welding. We've seen a real increase in employer engagement within the sector, given the skill shortage, so we are very excited to get under way and start training and up-skilling the next generation of welding talent."
