Local Community Rescue Service volunteer Joe Landy discovered a disgraceful mess on Thursday morning (15 April), left alongside the River Bann in Portglenone at Gortgole Forest.

Joe was walking his dog early this morning at the local beauty spot when he came across the bottles and cans, and the scorched ground where a fire had been lit on Wednesday night.

Some parents might be missing some cutlery from their homes today after a bunch of knives and forks were left scattered among the mess.

Well done to the local volunteer who went home to get what he needed to return and clean up the mess.

There has been growing concern and anger in the small rural community of Portglenone with a recent increase in antisocial behaviour in the area.

Last weekend a picnic table in the marina area was totally destroyed by a deliberate fire.

Responding to that incident on Monday, local councillor, Alderman Stewart McDonald, commented:

“The anti social behaviour which has increased of late is not welcome here and those involved represent a tiny minority in a village renowned for its community spirit.

“The decent people of Portglenone will work with the police to ensure it is stamped out.”
