Ballymena councillor Lawrie Philpott
Ballymena councillor Lawrie Philpott has announced his resignation from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), confirming he will now represent constituents as an Independent on Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.
Mr Philpott, who was elected to represent the Ballymena district electoral area in May 2023, said the move would allow him to put “people first” by stepping away from party politics.
In a statement, he explained:
“I have left party politics behind to put people first as an Independent Councillor.
“I would like to inform you that I have made the decision to resign from the DUP and I will now serve as an Independent Councillor on Mid & East Antrim Borough Council (MEABC).”
He acknowledged that leaving the party had not been easy but insisted it was the right decision for both himself and the community he serves.
“This decision has not been an easy one, but I believe it is the right one. My priority has always been – and will always remain – to represent and serve the people of Ballymena to the best of my ability.
By stepping away from party politics, I can focus entirely on the needs and concerns of local people, without being influenced by any wider political agenda.”
Cllr Philpott stressed his commitment to collaboration across the council chamber.
“I am committed to working constructively with all colleagues, regardless of political affiliation, to achieve what is best for our town.
“I will continue to work hard for the people of Ballymena, listening to your concerns and doing my best to get things done.
“Thank you for your trust and support.”
He also expressed gratitude to his former DUP colleagues, adding:
“I would like to thank those in the DUP who have supported me and wish you well for the remainder of this term.”
Cllr Philpott’s resignation comes amid ongoing shifts in local council politics across Northern Ireland, with several councillors in recent years choosing to leave party structures in favour of independent representation.
